Emma is a novel by the British writer Jane Austen. It was published in 1815 with the printing date of 1816, and it is one of her principal works. The main character of the story is Emma Woodhouse. At the beginning of the book, Austen describes a 21-year-old beautiful, intelligent and rich lady.
Plot
The novel takes place in the town of Highbury, located about 16 miles southwest of London.
The book begins immediately after the marriage of Miss Taylor to Mr. Weston. Emma Woodhouse believes that the Westons' wedding happened because she was the one who introduced them. So, she decides to dedicate herself to the role of matchmaking.
So, she starts looking for a husband to the young Harriet Smith and chooses the Vicar of the village, Mr. Elton. Emma considers that Mr. Elton is a better match for Harriet. And she convinces Harriet to reject Mr. Robert Martin's marriage proposal. Thereupon, Harriet refuses him against her will. Instead, Emma finds out that Mr. Elton wants to marry her and not Harriet. Hence, Harriet is hopeless, and Emma feels terrible for giving false hopes to her friend.
