Foreign Investment in Spain 1780-1914
Teresa Tortella
Last eBook Edition: 2006

The purpose of this Guide is to provide a better knowledge of archival collections containing records of foreign investment in Spain during the 19th century. Foreign investment is an important area for the study of Spanish economic history and has always attracted a large number of historians from Spain and elsewhere.

Some historians consider foreign investment as a vehicle for "colonialism" and others see it as a clear sign of the economic weakness of the recipient country, such as when domestic savings are insufficient to finance government borrowing. However nobody today denies the important role played by foreign capital in developing a number of infrastructures, industries and businesses in Spain, which probably could not have been developed by any other means.
