The Picture of Dorian Gray is the only novel by the Irish writer Oscar Wilde. The first version appeared in 1890 in the Philadelphia Lippincott monthly magazine. In 1891, after several modifications and adaptations, it was published in book format. The novel received several criticisms due to some content being against morality.

The main character of the novel is the rich and beautiful Dorian Gray. He has a portrait that ages instead of him, and the picture reflects the traces of his sins. The more cruel Dorian became, the younger and more beautiful his physical appearance became.

The story deals with themes such as eroticism and hedonism. Also, the reader can perceive during the story a proclamation and a critique of aestheticism. Aestheticism was an art movement during the 19th century.
