Charles Dickens

A Christmas Carol is one of the best-known stories of Charles Dickens. It was first published in December 1843 with illustrations by John Leech.

The novel is about a moneylender called Ebenezer Scrooge. Scrooge is an old and awful temper miser who receives a visit from four ghosts during Christmas Eve. As a result, Scrooge made some changes in his life.

Plot

The novel contains five staves:

Stave 1: Marley's Ghost

The story begins with the simple statement that Jacob Marley is dead. Jacob Marley was a business partner and only friend of Ebenezer Scrooge until he passed away seven years ago on Christmas Eve.

During the night, the ghost of Jacob Marley visits him. Marley talks about all the acts of greed and selfishness that he committed during his life. Thus, he had to hang a chain as a spirit. The ghost tells Scrooge that he also carries a much longer and heavier chain because of his lifestyle. Also, Marley announces to Scrooge the visit of three ghosts; they will give him the last chance to save himself from his destiny.
