Agnes Grey is a novel written by the British author Anne Brontë. It is the first of her works published in December 1847.
The book speaks of the activity of Agnes Grey as a governess in several upper-class families.
Some consider that the novel used the author's experience as a governess. In general, she worked in this profession for five years. Generally, the governesses were part of the bourgeoisie, and they received a good education. But they must get gainful employment in a foreign home due to their lack of financial resources. So, the governesses found themselves in an uncertain social position.
