The Beautiful and Damned is the title of the second novel by the American writer Francis Scott Fitzgerald. The Metropolitan Magazine published the story in installments in late 1921. The publisher Charles Scribner's Sons published in 1922 the book. Fitzgerald's novel that preceded this is This Side of Paradise.
Plot
Book 1
The protagonist, Anthony Patch, is a rich, handsome and spoiled young man who lives in a luxurious apartment in New York. He receives money from the family’s business that is granted by his grandfather, Adam Patch. Grandpa is a conservative and millionaire man. Also, Anthony spends his time planning to write a book while he waits for his grandfather to die. So, he can inherit all his money.
One day Anthony meets Gloria Gilbert, a beautiful girl from Kansas City. She is confident and eager to get the best out of life. The marriage between the two occurs soon since both are in love. But soon they realize their mutual defects and their differences. Anthony is a weak man, without initiatives and who drinks too much alcohol while Gloria gets bored and depressed. These behaviors leads them to fight often.
