The Scarlet Letter is a novel by the American author Nathaniel Hawthorne. In 1850 the book was published and considered one of the most important works of American literature.

Nathaniel Hawthorne was an American novelist and a short story writer. Many of her Gothic fiction and dark romanticism stories made her known.

Plot

The novel's plot takes place in Boston, Massachusetts, a settlement in New England. It occurs during the era of Puritanism. At the end of the XVII century. Hawthorne tells the story of Hester Prynne, accused of adultery. Despite public accusations, she refuses to give the name of her baby's father. Thus, Hester must wear the scarlet letter "A" on her chest as punishment and send her to prison. Hester gives birth to a girl, whom she calls Pearl.
