Introduction
1984 is a novel by the English writer known by the pen name of George Orwell. The book belongs to the category dystopian social science fiction. Dystopian is the antonym of utopia, i.e., it refers to an undesirable or shadowy community or society. And social science fiction because it discusses anthropology and human behavior and interactions. The publication of the book was in 1949.
Indeed, this novel, 1984, popularized concepts such as "Big Brother," "Doublethink," and "Thought Police." Another term used as an adjective based on the novel is "Orwellian." It refers to a society that used the information to manipulate and supervise its population. Besides, it is a society with a lot of political and social repression. Yet, this novel's elements already appeared in the Russian book "We" by writer Yevgeny Zamyatin.
Also, 1984 is a best-selling novel and one of the most influential books of the 20th century. Many analysts suggest that we are beginning to become an Orwellian society because they find similarities between the 1984 community and today's society.
