Plot

Professor Lidenbrock Makes A Great Discovery

The story begins with the acquisition of Professor Lidenbrock on May 24, 1863. A manuscript written in runes is Lidenbrock's acquisition. The manuscript's author is the jurist, historian, and Icelandic writer Snorri Sturluson. Runes are the ancient characters of the Teutons.

For instance, the runic alphabets are a group of alphabets that share the use of letters called runes. The Germanic languages in Scandinavia and the British Isles used this alphabet to write.

Furthermore, Professor Lidenbrock finds an encrypted message from the fictitious alchemist Arne Saknussemm. Arne's name is an allusion to Árni Magnússon, and it is believed that he lived in the 16th century. Also, the professor forces his assistant Axel to decipher the encrypted message. It contains the announcement of scientific discovery.
